Two very functional packages to become competent in are Adobe Flash Creative Suite 4 and Adobe Dreamweaver Creative Suite 4. Adobe abbreviate Creative Suite 4 to CS4 - make sure you don't register on a course still teaching CS3.

Becoming proficient at Dreamweaver will allow you to deliver your creative ideas onto all mobile media. But Dreamweaver by itself isn't enough - you also need Flash for amazing special effects and animation. Collectively they are considered the best tools for a design student to master.

It's essential whilst doing your course that you prepare a portfolio of some of the designs you've created. This will stand you in good stead at interview. In line with most artistic work, Web Design is often judged differently by different people. Therefore an employer or client will need to see your work before taking you on. Anyone who plans to set up their own small Web Design business after studying may not need to get certified. However, go for the ACE or ACP certifications if accreditations are what you're looking for. You can take either of these in both Dreamweaver and Flash.

Commercially Competitive

Don't sell yourself short though by limiting your skills to just the stuff we can see on the screen. To really clinch the job or contract, we encourage you to choose a multi discipline course that embraces other subjects too. For example it's a good idea to be taught about how CSS and HTML work, in case you have the need to 'debug' sites or streamline them. Plus, professional sites need to be dynamic, so you'll need an understanding of dynamic HTML and PHP programming.

Next comes e-commerce - where financial interactions need to happen via the website. And to conclude the list for now, a requirement that's very overlooked by many is SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation. This is possibly one of the most important areas of all - as it will teach you how to make your clients' websites visible on the Search Engines, and thus commercially viable. It doesn't matter how fabulous your websites are, they can't do the job they're designed for if nobody knows where they are.
